Graves’ Disease

What is Graves’ disease?

Graves’ disease is an autoimmune condition in which the thyroid gland becomes hyperactive and produces too much thyroid hormone. It is more common in women, and aside from the typical symptoms related to hyperthyroidism, it can also cause thyroid eye disease (Graves’ ophthalmopathy), which manifests as bulging of the eyes.

How is Graves’ disease treated?

If you are diagnosed with Graves’ disease, you will be referred to an endocrinologist who will discuss your treatment options with you. Generally, the first treatment will include medications to regulate your thyroid hormone levels. Other, more definitive, treatment options include radioactive iodine treatment or surgery. Your endocrinologist will be able to discuss these options with you. If surgery is recommended, Dr Bell is skilled in the surgical treatment of Graves’ disease, which entails a total thyroidectomy (removal of the entire thyroid gland).
