Hernia Surgery

What is involved in hernia surgery (hernia repair)?

The choice of hernia repair is dependent on the type of hernia that you have been diagnosed with. Generally, hernias can be fixed by open or laparoscopic (keyhole) techniques, but not all hernias are suited to both techniques. Most hernia repairs will require a placement of a mesh. A mesh is a synthetic material that strengthens the repair and reduces the chance of the hernia coming back. Small hernias may be closed with sutures alone, without the addition of a mesh.

Hernia repairs are amongst the most common surgeries performed in Australia. However, the decision making regarding the available treatments for your hernia can be quite complex. Dr Bell will be able to assess your hernia and guide you through the options available to you.
